Davis Cup opponents Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and Frenchman Michael Llodra will have to put the past behind them after the Davis Cup final with the pair set to team up on the ATP from January.
The doubles permutations for the tie are even more complex after Llodra split from French partner - and Davis Cup teammate - Arnaud Clement to join forces with Zimonjic.
Llodra could well do two jobs as a candidate for both singles and doubles for the nine-time champion French.
Zimonjic called time a few month ago on his three-year run with Belgrade-born Canadian Daniel Nestor, a partnership which yielded three Grand Slam titles and two titles in three years at the ATP season-ending championships.
No real explanation of the decision was ever given, but Nestor, winner of 71 doubles titles, the most of any current player, has landed on his feet and will team with Max Mirnyi in 2011 as Zimonjic tries his luck with Llodra.
The Bahamas-based Nestor may be quietly jealous of his former partner's Davis Cup success, given Canada's record of barely escaping the Americas relegation rounds season after season.
“That’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do better in, in Davis Cup,” said the 38-year-old. “That’s one of the reasons why I’ve played for so many years, continued to play.” But Nestor admitted he will only occasionally follow the Davis Cup finals exploits as he concentrates on his few weeks off before ATP tennis and his new partnership resumes in January.
