  • In-form Federer wins Group B

    11/25/10 8:10 PM | Kelli DeMario
In-form Federer wins Group B World No. 2 Roger Federer is through to the ATP World Tour Finals semi, following his straight-set victory over World No. 4 Robin Soderling. The four-time champion extended his series lead to 15-1 against the Swede.

Second seed Roger Federer continued his strong effort in London, having downed fourth seed Robin Soderling in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-3. The Swiss struck 11 aces through one hour and 28 minutes of play. With the victory, Federer is through to his 8th semifinal at the ATP World Tour Finals.

Federer led 2-1 in the opening set, after Soderling erred on the volley. The Swede leveled to 4-4, as the Swiss pushed a forehand long. Aggressive shot selection helped Federer to 3-2 in the ensuing tie-break. After missing a first set point at 6-4, the 29-year-old closed with a cross-court backhand.

Soderling earned two break points early in set two, but failed to convert. Federer broke at 4-3, as a well-timed pass forced an error from the Swede. Double match-point came quickly for the World No. 2, who completed the day once Soderling missed a return.

"I'm happy I was able to come out today and play a good, tough, solid match against a player who I thought was in good shape," said Federer. "I purposely didn't want to know the calculations before today's match, whereas I was in the loop very clearly what I kind of needed to do last year, which I think played on my mind a little bit.

I just wanted to come out and try to play as good a match as I can. Losing is never a solution to trying to win a tournament. I'm playing real well (and) I'm through to the semis."

Federer ended the afternoon with two service breaks and 35 of 43 first-service points captured.

Pretty good performance by Roger. Soderling was playing well indeed. Let's hope he keeps this pace. I wanna see a Roger-Rafa final.

Emiliano55 , 11/25/10 8:43 PM

Good show by both players and it was tennis and not bullfight. I would have not regretted a Soderling victory but that was not to be for this guy Feddy is playing percentage tennis now-conservative, cautious and intelligent. Go on as long as you can do. I don't think we have a fed-nad meeting in the final for the law of averages.

newfangkc , 11/25/10 9:06 PM

What I see is a brainless ball basher almost winning one set off the supposed 'goat', brainless enough to let a point go and lost the set, despite having a good chance to win the set. Yeah the ball basher certainly made the goat looked good, doing some brainless net rushing! Well done ball basher, you deserve your demotion back to your rightful place!

luckystar , 11/25/10 10:29 PM

If brainless ball bashing and stupid net rushing is the so called good tennis, than I would rather have so called bull fight. At least bull fights are not one sided affair. Brainless ball bashing makes the opponent looks good, just let the ball basher self destruct will do, easy day at the office!

luckystar , 11/25/10 11:02 PM

Federer looking mightily impressive at the moment, and with the Nadal is performing as well, we so need a final match up between the two, the tournament needs it as well

lebsta2 , 11/26/10 12:28 AM

@ luckystar .. bad day at office? Never seen you post something this senseless :(

justtennis , 11/26/10 2:58 AM

I think Roger is admitting that he let Juan Martin beat him last year so Murray wouldn't make it to the semis . That's what he meant by losing a match is not a way to win a tournament. He thought last year it would be clear sailing with no Murray around but he got beaten by Davydenko anyway.

I think this year's approach was better. Forget the calculations and just win every match.

numero , 11/26/10 3:23 AM

senseless, not when somebody misunderstood what a good match between two top players for bull fighting, American football or what nut. I'm referring to newfangkc on another thread. It seems to this person, only Fed can play tennis and everybody else is simply bullfighting, what a load of bullshit! Totally offensive comment by newfangkc, simply atrocious!

luckystar , 11/26/10 3:36 AM

Talking about buffalo and bull fights, I'm glad to see a buffalo blowing Fed off the court last year at the USO, buffalos rule the day going forward, like it or not!

luckystar , 11/26/10 4:11 AM

luckystar, great grace.

FEDistheGOAT , 11/26/10 4:57 AM

Soderling is a brainless ball basher, I hate when he wins coz he is very one-dimensional and boring to watch. Berdych is a more complete player than Soderling. He has power, movement and good touch at the net. Unfortunately he does not have the mental strength of Soderling, that why Soderling is ranked above him.
Fed and Nadal are the most complete player in the our right now, thats why they are the best to watch...they are closely followed by Nole and then Andy Murray in terms of a compete game.

atul1985 , 11/26/10 5:40 AM

totally agree with luckystar. great grace from the same old fed fans...

homos , 11/26/10 6:08 AM

Exactly homos, great grace from one particular Fed fanatics, newfangkc, insulting the top few guys not named Fed! How gracious was that?

luckystar , 11/26/10 6:43 AM

numero, 11/26/10 3:23 AM it sure does read that way ;-)

@newfangkc , 11/25/10 9:06 PM

Tennis vs bullfight.......ummh!!!!!! I missed the first 5 matches of Fed/Sod yesterday but wasn't too bothered because I knew it would send me to sleep anyway. Half way through, I was tossing up whether to go and watch paint dry or watch a pre-recorded programme, in the end I stuck with it hoping for some excitement but it was not to be, however, as you can't complain about something you didn't see, I'm satisfied to say that having watched the match to the end, it was one of the dullest matches so far at the O2 this year.

All the epic matches in this era have Rafa participating, what does that tell us? If I went to a Ballet and the dancers were running around like tennis players I would think I was in the wrong place, see what I mean???

newfangkc, you are just a Desperate FedUP.

nadline , 11/26/10 9:35 AM

This was a great win for federer. I liked the shot in the 6th game of the 1st set when he was about to do a drop shot, and then punched it deep instead. It left soderling out of balance and he couldn't retrieve the ball.

tj600 , 11/26/10 10:04 AM

@nadline, Everyone have their own style... I don't think Fed's game needs to be bashed to highlight Rafa... Also, there were some epic matches for Federer before Nadal came to limelight as well... Vs Safin at AO 05, Vs Sampras at Wim 01. On the contrary, Nadal's 99% epic matches are with Fed only... Nadal Vs Djokovic Madrid 2009 SF was a great match.

I don't like Nadal's game style, but never will bash as I respect it as his style of success /play. By bashing someone you are not earning some points here.

RMadhu , 11/26/10 11:46 AM

You're right RMadhu, everybody here has his/her favourites.
I understand luckystar loosing is cool though, some comments are very infuriating by their immature senselessness.
I'll watch the highlights of this match on youtube .... I've no tv nor internet at home now....brrrrr

Shireling , 11/26/10 12:00 PM

@luckystar

I am on this forum around last 8 months and i have seen some of your very knowledgable and in depth analysis post regarding game. you are among very very rare kind of people here who talks about most of the time tennis and try to do analysis of game but sometimes you just carried away with some other fanatics and behave in a way which is not you.

mani4Tennis , 11/26/10 12:12 PM

that is the problem with the few very nasty fed fans on this site....they can really bring out the worst in ANYONE!!!!

homos , 11/26/10 12:28 PM

mani4Tennis, yes I'm normally not like this, but you should read what newfangkc wrote about the Rafa/Nole match on the other thread to see where I'm coming from. To think that this newfangkc knows about tennis, talk about tennis and yet produces rubbish like that make people really pissed. Nobody force him to like Rafa or Nole, but please show some respect for these tennis players. If newfangkc thinks tennis is about Fed only, please go and watch Fed and stop watching others and stop passing nasty remarks like those he/she posted. Calling all these players bulls and buffaloes really incensed some people!!

luckystar , 11/26/10 12:41 PM

luckystar, and that gives you licence to say whatever you please? What you said on this thread was overboard no matter what some poster might have posted on another thread. I read that post and yes, i agree that it was a stupid, senseless post, but that doesnt mean you come and disrespect fed... would you take it lying down if i posted similiar stuff about nadal in response to your post above? Or is that the sort of troll war that you want to initiate?

FEDistheGOAT , 11/26/10 1:46 PM

What disrespect I shown for Fed. Didn't he got blown off the court by somebody last year at the USO? I'm stating the truth, using a term coined by newfangkc to describe any other tennis player not named Fed, whilst newfangkc was simply disrespectful. Why don't you reproach him/her instead? Just because he is your fellow Fed fans you can condone what he/she said but chide me for saying what I said, despite of me saying the truth?

You do not need to post similar stuff, your fellow fed fan, newfangkc had already done the job and saved you the trouble. Why don't you write something attention to newfangkc to address the issue instead?

luckystar , 11/26/10 2:57 PM

@ luckystar

Lol, so now becuz newfangkc bashed on Nadal so you go over here and start doing the same on Fed? I don't think newfangkc represents all Fed fans, nor does all Fed fans look down on all other tennis player but Fed. I for one still see Nadal's match as good ones though. So if one person unreasonably hitting your idol, you have to "hit back" but instead of taking on that person you start criticizing his/her idol instead? I think your matter is with newfangkc more than with Fed.

ch78 , 11/26/10 7:02 PM

@RMadhu , 11/26/10 11:46 AM

Did you notice that I was responding to newfangkc who called Rafa's style bull fighting. Perhaps yu should take the trouble to read all the posts before sticking your oar in, thanks.

nadline , 11/26/10 8:47 PM

Why are people having issue with me than with newfangkc? Perhaps ch78 you can explain?

luckystar , 11/26/10 9:06 PM

luckystar, you call newfang a nadal hater and senseless right? now unless you classify yourself along those lines, you'll understand why people have an issue with you suddenly dropping it in this thread... I dont get what the connect is what newfang said on that thread to the fed bashing you did on this thread. I like conversations with you lucky and that is why i commented because i have rarely seen you go off like this.

FEDistheGOAT , 11/26/10 9:36 PM

@ all,

It is said that what makes us most angry is that which is the closest to what we believe to be true!
I know the reason why luckystar went off her rocker, it is becasue newfangkc said a truth that was so close to what she has been desperately trying not to believe despite knowing it is true!
This threatened her and she started attacking left right nad center.
Normal reaction.
Besides, in my class the post doc guy had clearly explained to us all why only people with some sort of mental trauma will be able to appreciate the kind of game that players like nada has, it takes a consious disregard of beauty but I wont go into the technicalities now.
I am not saying I agree with what newfangkc said, I have no problems with djoko's game, he is a fighter and I give him that. I have no problem with the way nada plays, he cant do any better, and some people are just born as freaks. All I have a problem is with how the public just doesnt see beyond what his pr team does to his image. It is so transparent that it is an insult to one's intelligence as another poster said!!!

seethetruth , 11/26/10 9:47 PM

FITG, you know Im not into bashing of any player. Now newfangkc left a nasty post on the other thread and disappeared from there despite some of our responses there. I see he/she was posting here and I'll let he/she has a taste of his/her own medicine. Well newfangkc didn't respond but you guys did. So you see it's never nice seeing people criticizing your favorite player(s) with some nasty remarks. If you are fair minded Fed fans, then I'll appreciate you taking issue with newfangkc as well, after you have read about what he wrote about Rafa and Nole.

I hope I can rest my case now, since the person who ought to respond chooses not to respond. If he/she is reading this, I hope he/she regretted what was said on the other thread and stopped saying things like that in future. Well apologies to you the fair minded Fed fans.

luckystar , 11/26/10 9:58 PM

And you have people like 'seethetruth' chosing to add fuel to fire, going everywhere passing slandering remarks about Rafa and his team! It doesn't help matters, does it?

luckystar , 11/26/10 10:03 PM

ok luckystar, for the record, if it matters so much to you that a fed fan address newfangkc, for your peace of mind, i will do it.

@ newfnagkc,
Dear newfangkc, most of us happen to think that nadal's matches are fascinating and captivating due to the mental toughness and physical roughness that goes into it. It might not have the finesse or grace of a fed match but it has more high octane tennis and crazy moments. It is upto an individual what he/she likes isnt it? I dont want to antagonise you or come across as patronising, but maybe you should realize what new dimension rafa has brought into modern tennis. Upto you to like it or not of course.

is that enough luckystar? Usrely you dont expect an apology from other fed fans on newfang's behlaf? You do realize that we dont all chill out at a club or anything don't you....

FEDistheGOAT , 11/26/10 10:05 PM

FITG of course I don't expect all Fed fans to respond to my posts. It's only that people have issues with my posts and not with newfangkc's that makes me think and ask why is it so. Anyway thanks for your response and hope to really put my case to rest.

luckystar , 11/26/10 10:15 PM

Attention you all idiot fedfans,

Leave luckystar alone, shoot the person who made that stupid remarks. Suprisingly you can't shoot that person because he/she is your fellow idiot fedfans.
