Four-time ATP World Tour Finals champion Roger Federer returns to competition this week, set to commence his quest for the title in London. The World No. 2 enters the tournament as the second seed and leader in Group B.
Roger Federer heads to London for the third week of November, looking to secure a fifth title at the season-ending ATP World Tour Finals. The 29-year-old is four times a champion at the event, having taken home top honors in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. The Swiss makes his return to play after a semifinal finish in Paris (lost to Monfils).
Federer begins the tournament with a 60-13 season record, bolstered by recent title-winning runs in Stockholm (def. Mayer) and Basel (def. Djokovic). The sixteen-time Grand Slam champion tops Group B this week, seeded second after World No. 1 Rafael Nadal, who headlines Group A.
Joining the World No. 2 in Group B are: (4) Robin Soderling, (5) Andy Murray and (7) David Ferrer. The ATP World Tour Finals will not follow a traditional single knock-out format, with round-robin play slated to start on Sunday.
Federer will kick off his campaign against Ferrer Sunday evening, as the two close play for Day 1. The players are scheduled to follow Soderling and Murray, who face off earlier in the day.
Should Federer pass through to the semifinal, he looks to difficult matches with the Group B combatants, who are: (1) Nadal, third-seeded 2008 champion Novak Djokovic, (6) Tomas Berdych and (8) Andy Roddick.
Federer has a combined 29-9 record against his Group A opponents, with eight of 9 matches lost to World No. 5 Andy Murray.
