    11/21/10 11:24 PM | Kelli DeMario
Federer battles past Ferrer in London Four-time ATP World Tour Finals champion Roger Federer made a strong start to the tournament, with a straight-set victory over David Ferrer. The World No. 2 extended his lead to 11-0 in the series Sunday evening.

Roger Federer put together a solid performance on Sunday, having downed familiar opponent David Ferrer in straight sets. The World No. 2 secured four of 9 break chances to seal a 6-1, 6-4 win in one hour and 28 minutes.

A combination of aggressive play and Ferrer’s mistakes built Federer a 4-0 edge at the start. The Spaniard recovered a service break to 1-4, then surrendered serve in the following game. Set point came at 5-1 for the Swiss, who closed on a missed backhand from Ferrer.

Federer continued his effort into set two with a break at 2-2. The World No. 2 fought through a nine-minute game, saving two break chances to 4-2. Ferrer collected three break points at 4-5, but could not convert. A settled Federer went on to complete the match with an ace.

The 29-year-old ended the evening with 6 aces and 32 of 44 first-service points won.

Ferrer missed five of 6 break points and committed 6 double faults through 88 minutes of play.

Not a great performance by Roger. He won't get past the RR playing like this.

Yeah, not the greatest performance from Federer, an unforced error count that high would've seen him lose that match to an in-form player in this tournament, somewhat fortunate that Ferrer played pretty damn awfully. Even playing sun-par he managed to generate a lot of chances on the Federer serve, even managed a break in the 1st.

If Fed wants this title he needs to step it up a gear.

Not a bad performance considering it's his first match but he will have to raise his level against murray.
Best wishes

As always, roger feder is no where looking to be learning anything from his previous losses, mistakes & matches.

In this ways he will not win this tournament.

I thought Fed was playing well, though I think Ferrer played poorly in the first set. This was only the first match and I'm sure they both would improve in their next matches. I'm eagerly awaiting the showdown between Fed and Murray. It's interesting to see how Murray pitch against this Fed, after their Shanghai showdown. To me Murray played one of his best matches in that Shanghai final. I think this Fed is slightly better than the one we saw in that Shanghai final.

I think it was a good match from Roger considering it is the first match after playing a totally different surface in Paris. He played agressive and thus you simply commit the errors - not wait for the other's ones. He would need to make less errors to pass Murray and I thing he will!

Such a poor performance by Ferrer, I feel so sorry for him...he gets so nervous when playing BIG guys at big events and this is his main disadvantage...I expect him to play better as tournament progresses but he still may not be able to beat any of the two remaining guys...Andy is just so good although I agree Ferrer is not a perfect match for him....Sod has a lot at stake and Ferrer is his biggest chance for a win...
