The French Davis Cup team will be bonding over the weekend at a training camp in the south part of the country as captain Guy Forget ponders his selection options for the December 3-5 final in Belgrade against Serbia.
Flamboyant Gael Monfils has nailed down the number one singles spot with his brilliant week at the Paris Masters, marred only by his final loss to Robin Soderling. With Jo-Wilfried Tsonga out until the new year with a knee injury, there is a possibility for the visitors with Michael Llodra, a surprise Paris semi-finalist and a dual threat in singles and doubles.
Along for the training sessions will be Monfils, Llodra, Gilles Simon, Richard Gasquet, Arnaud Clement and Julien Benneteau with Tsonga along for moral support. So keen is Richard Gasquet to make the team that he withdrew from a Challenger event this week.
"There are several of us who want the position," said Llodra. "There's the surface to be taken into account, and then there's a tactical decision to make (for Forget). All will depend on the surface and how we feel at the time."
Serb Novak Djokovic will have little time for specific preparation as he is involved this week and next in the year-end World Tour Finals in London. Teammate Janko Tipsarevic is on a delayed honeymoon in Dubai as he heals a minor hip injury sustained this month in Basel.
