World No. 5 Robin Soderling made the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris final following his three-set victory over Michael Llodra on Saturday. The Swede saved a trio of match points to set up a championship meeting with Gael Monfils.
Fourth seed Robin Soderling advanced to his fifth ATP World Tour final of the season after taking out an in-form Michael Llodra in the semi, 6-7(0), 7-5, 7-6(6). The Swede fought off three match points to seal a win in two hours and 49 minutes.
A closely-contested opening set offered no service breaks for either player. Llodra started the tiebreak quickly to take a 3-0 lead. The Frenchman cruised through the remainder, as he held six set points at 6-0. A well-struck ace sealed the set in 43 minutes.
Soderling broke the Llodra serve at 5-5 in the second with a forehand winner. After missing three set points, the Swede earned a fourth at 6-5. The world No. 5 leveled as the Frenchman pushed a backhand well long.
Soderling jumped to a 2-0 advantage in the deciding set. Llodra came back midway through to hold break point at 3-4. A diving backhand volley brought the Frenchman to level terms. The world No. 34 collected three match points in the 12th game, but was unable to convert.
The Swede went on to take a 3-2 lead in the ensuing breaker, once Llodra missed a volley. A forehand error cost the fourth seed the edge to 5-5. Soderling squandered a first match point at 6-5, then held on to convert at 7-6 with a final forehand winner.
Soderling completed the match with 19 aces and five of six break points saved.
He faces 12th seed Gael Monfils for the title on Sunday. The Frenchman saved five match points to oust top seed Roger Federer in the other semifinal, 7-6(7), 6-7(1), 7-6(4).
