Ferrer overcomes Fognini, Melzer beats Giraldo David Ferrer outlasts Fabio Fognini in a third-set tiebreaker on Wednesday in Paris. Ferrer is joined in the third round by Jurgen Melzer, who dispatched Santiago Giraldo.

    (7) David Ferrer d. (Q) Fabio Fognini 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4)

In his bid to lock up a spot in the World Tour Finals, Ferrer almost lost his opening match at the BNP Paribas Masters on Wednesday evening. Instead, Ferrer battled back from a set and a break down and eventually got the best of Fognini in a third-set tiebreaker. The seventh-seeded Spaniard set up a third-round clash against Jurgen Melzer, who needs to win the title in order to qualify for London.

Ferrer led by a break early in the first set but gave back two breaks to throw it away. When Fognini broke immediately for a 1-0 lead in the second, it looked like he had control. The underdog Italian, however, suffered the same fate Ferrer had endured in the first set. After losing the second, Fognini survived a flurry of break points to force a tiebreaker in the third. At that point, though, Ferrer proved to be too tough and he cruised through the decider seven points to four.

    (11) Jurgen Melzer d. (Q) Santiago Giraldo 6-3, 7-6(6)

Needing to win the title to have any chance at World Tour Finals qualification, Melzer kicked off his Paris campaign with a straight set win over Giraldo on Wednesday. Thanks to stellar all-court play, the 12th-ranked Austrian positively dominated the first set despite serving at just 48 percent. Melzer, who dropped only five points in five service games, used one break to close it out at 5-3.

Giraldo appeared to be on the way to quick exit when he fell behind by a break in the second. However, the 22-year-old Colombian battled back and earned his first break of the afternoon for 4-4. Four holds later, a tiebreaker was necessary to decide things. Giraldo continued to be competitive, but Melzer prevailed eight points to six and advanced after one hour and 36 minutes of play. The No. 11 seed finished with four aces to Giraldo's eight and both men double-faulted twice.
