World No. 6 Tomas Berdych made a strong start to the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Paris, as he defeated veteran Florent Serra in straight sets. The former champion is through to the round of 16.
Fifth seed Tomas Berdych needed less than an hour to dismiss wildcard Florent Serra 6-3, 6-1. The Czech, who held eight straight service games without facing a break point, struck seven aces through 47 minutes of play.
After taking a 3-1 lead in the opening set, Berdych went on to close with little difficulty. He continued into set two, winning six consecutive games from 0-1.
The world No. 6 completed the evening with 24 winners and five unforced errors. Serra struggled through a poor effort on the return, having won just one point through two sets.
Berdych is slated to meet either 10th seed Nikolay Davydenko or Thomaz Bellucci in the round of 16.
