Switzerland’s No. 2 Stanislas Wawrinka is into the second round of the Paris Masters with a win over French qualifier Josselin Ouanna. Jarkko Nieminen was also in action on Monday.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Josselin Ouanna 6-3, 7-5
In a sloppy, though successful start to his Paris Masters bid, Stanislas Wawrinka defeated world No. 173 Josselin Ouanna. Neither man was in good form on Monday, though Ouanna had particular trouble with his backhand.
The second set was only as close as it was because Wawrinka was not clicking on the return. The Swiss was never in any real danger of losing this match – it just took him longer than it should have to secure the second set service break. Wawrinka will take on the No. 15 seed Ivan Ljubicic in the second round.
Jarkko Nieminen def. Xavier Malisse 6-4, 6-3
Belgium’s Xavier Malisse was never really a factor in this first-round match. The Belgian relies heavily on his serve to win him free points – and he simply did not serve well enough. He out-aced Nieminen six aces to one, but the Finn is far better off the baseline. Six aces are not enough for Malisse to get the win from a quality player like Nieminen.
Nieminen was broken once in the opening set, but he was still by far the better player. He was able to secure a pair of service breaks from Malisse. And in the second set, Malisse’s service percentage plummeted to 45%, which gave Nieminen the chance to get the early break and take the straight-set victory.
Nieminen moves into an intriguing second-round match against American Andy Roddick.
