Latvia’s Ernests Gulbis was once again the recipient of a free pass into the next round when a second straight opponent retired against him.
Ernests Gublis def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 3-0 (ret.)
First it was Juan Ignacio Chela retiring with a wrist injury. Now Mikhail Youzhny and his chronic back problems have given Ernests Gublis a veritable free pass into the third round.
The “win” gives Gulbis his first back-to-back victory since Latvia took on Poland in Davis Cup back in September. The Latvian has been struggling since his impressive clay court season this spring. His last good result was a quarterfinal showing at the Madrid Masters.
Gulbis will face the winner of Andy Roddick and Jarkko Nieminen in the third round.
Gilles Simon def. Andrey Golubev 3-6, 6-4, 6-3
For nearly 2/3 of this match, Andrey Golubev was the better player. The Kazakh completely outclassed Simon in the opening set – and the second set was headed the same direction. Golubev was up a service break on the Frenchman and playing far better.
Out of nowhere, Golubev began serving poorly and he permitted Simon to break him twice. The poor play from Golubev combined with slightly fewer errors from Simon gave the Frenchman the lifeline he needed to get back in the match.
After losing the lead in the second, Golubev was never the same. The third was by far the best for Simon. He faced no break points and he converted on the only chance he had against Golubev’s serve.
