  • Gasquet outlasts Mahut in third-set tiebreaker

    11/9/10 12:32 AM | Ricky Dimon
Gasquet outlasts Mahut in third-set tiebreaker Richard Gasquet survives Nicolas Mahut in three sets on Monday in Paris. Gasquet is joined in the second round by Radek Stepanek, who cruised past Michael Russell.

    Richard Gasquet d. (WC) Nicolas Mahut 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(7)

One of Wimbledon's marathon men went the distance one more time, and again he suffered a heartbreaking defeat. Mahut, who lost to John Isner 6-4, 3-6, 6-7(7), 7-6(3), 70-68 at the All-England Club, extended Gasquet to a third-set tiebreaker on Monday at the BNP Paribas Open before falling in two hours and 27 minutes.

Gasquet faced no break points in the first set, but Mahut struck early in the second and consolidated it the rest of the way. A tense third set saw Mahut fight off two break points while Gasquet saved one. The world No. 28 raced to a 6-3 lead in the decisive 'breaker, but Mahut survived three straight match points and saved another at 6-7. Finally at 8-7, Gasquet fired a passing shot that his opponent could not handle to set up a meeting with No. 1 seed Roger Federer.

Radek Stepanek d. (LL) Michael Russell 6-2, 6-0

Russell got into the main draw when Janko Tipsarevic pulled out, but the 32-year-old American's stay in Paris did not last long; 49 minutes to be exact. Stepanek fired eight aces without double-faulting and dropped a mere six points in seven service games to book a second-round clash with No. 14 seed Nicolas Almagro.

Stepanek at least had a match on his hands in the first set. Russell managed to hold two service games, but the world No. 84 won only two points in four return games. Set two was simply a formality as Russell completely disappeared. Stepanek surprisingly had to fight off one break point, but the 41st-ranked Czech took care of his other service games with ease and lost just nine points over the final six games.
