Robin Soderling and Andy Roddick are the top seeds in the third section of the draw. Soderling got the No. 4 seed when world No. 1 Rafael Nadal withdrew from the tournament unexpectedly at the end of last week.
This is actually a tough section of the draw. Andy Roddick comes into the tournament off a semifinal showing in Basel where he was lambasted by Roger Federer. The American is still looking to qualify for the year-end tournament, and so has special motivation to do well here.
Soderling has already secured a spot for the London finals, set for later this month. The Swede comes into Paris off a semifinal showing in Valencia, where he lost to eventual champion David Ferrer.
This is a tricky section of the draw. Other seeds in the third quarter are (15) Ivan Ljubicic and (9) Mikhail Youzhny, both of whom are good hard-courters. In addition, Jarkko Nieminen is lurking as a potential second round opponent for Roddick, which could prove difficult for the American.
A slight edge to Roddick and Soderling to get through to the quarters, but don’t be surprised if there is a surprise quarterfinalist from this section.
