Roger Federer and David Ferrer are heading into Paris fresh off titles in Basel and Valencia, respectively. They are on a collision course for the Paris quarterfinals in the top section of the draw.
With Rafael Nadal out of this week's BNP Paribas Masters, Roger Federer headlines the field as the No. 1 seed. Federer is coming off his fourth career title in Basel, where he avenged last year's loss to Novak Djokovic in the final.
The second-ranked Swiss has a bye in the top quarter of the draw along with Nicolas Almagro, Jurgen Melzer, and David Ferrer. Just as he did last year, Federer will face a Frenchman in his opening match. Last season he was stunned by Julien Benneteau, and this time around he will go up against either Richard Gasquet or Wimbledon marathon man Nicolas Mahut.
Although a second-round meeting with Gasquet could be tough, Federer should not have too much trouble reaching the quarterfinals--a stage that he has shockingly never been past in Paris. Awaiting him at that point, however, could be an in-form Ferrer. The seventh-seeded Spaniard won the Valencia title on Sunday to put himself in prime position for World Tour Finals qualification.
Ferrer will open with either Michael Berrer or Fabio Fognini. Standing in Ferrer's way of the quarterfinals is likely the 11th-seeded Melzer, who is in his best year on tour at 29 years old. Melzer will kick off his campaign against either Thiemo De Bakker or Santiago Giraldo.
