Defending champion Novak Djokovic took another step closer to the title match with a win over Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen.
Novak Djokovic def. Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 7-6(6)
World No. 3 Novak Djokovic was forced to fight hard for this second round win. Jarkko Nieminen gave him as much as he could handle, especially in the second set. Djokovic, who understood how difficult the win was, celebrated as though he had already won the title.
The first set was decided by a single service break. Djokovic fought off each of the four break points against him, while converting on the only chance he had on Nieminen’s serve.
The Finn gave nothing to Djokovic in the second set. The Serb was forced to work hard for each game he won. There was only one break point chance in the entire set, which Nieminen saved. Djokovic only just managed to squeak out the win in straight sets by taking the tiebreaker 8-6.
Richard Gasquet def. Tobias Kamke 6-4, 7-5
Tobias Kamke, the German who took out No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych on Wednesday, ran out of luck against France’s Richard Gasquet. This was a bizarrely sloppy match with Gasquet caving to pressure a number of times while trying to close things out.
Notably, with Gasquet serving for the set at 5-3, the Frenchman threw in not one, but two double-faults, and let Kamke back into the match. Only at the tail-end of the set was Gasquet able to secure another service break to win in straight sets.
