David Nalbandian overcomes Marin Cilic in the Basel second round on Thursday. He is joined in the quarterfinals by Andy Roddick, who eased past Andrey Golubev.
David Nalbandian d. (6) Marin Cilic 4-6, 6-4, 6-4
Cilic showed signs of his former self in a strong first set, but his slump continued as went down to Nalbandian in the second round of the Swiss Indoors on Thursday. Nalbandian, who destroyed Cilic in each of their two previous meetings, battled to a hard-fought victory in one hour and 59 minutes. However, it was Cilic who got off to an impressive start. Although the 15th-ranked Croat gave back a break midway through the first set, his second break of the day finished it off at 5-4.
From there, though, Nalbandian dominated the rest of the way--especially on serve. The 29th-ranked Argentine dropped a mere six service points in sets two and three combined, three in each set. One break was enough for him to serve out the second frame of play at 5-4 and it was the same in the final set. Cilic served at 79 percent in the third, but a double-fault on break point at 1-1 proved costly. Nalbandian goes on to face Andy Roddick while Cilic's record in his last 13 matches falls to 5-8.
(4) Andy Roddick d. Andrey Golubev 6-3, 6-4
Roddick broke serve in his first return game of the match and never looked back en route to a routine win over Golubev in one hour and 15 minutes. The ninth-ranked American cracked 10 aces without double-faulting to reach the quarterfinals. After his initial break, Roddick held easily throughout the opening set by winning 16 of 18 first-serve points.
Basel's No. 4 seed sprinted to a 4-1 lead in the second with two more breaks in his pocket. He finally faced his first break point of the match and donated serve for 4-2, but Golubev never came close to breaking again. The 36th-ranked Kazakh saw his opponent take care of two easy service games to end the proceedings. Roddick won 34 of 37 first-serve points while Golubev wrapped up his effort with three aces and three double-faults.
