  • Roddick serves way past Querrey

    11/3/10 6:32 PM | Ricky Dimon
Roddick serves way past Querrey Andy Roddick wins an all-American clash against Sam Querrey on Wednesday in Basel. Roddick is joined in the second round by Radek Stepanek, who ousted Thiemo De Bakker.

    (4) Andy Roddick d. Sam Querrey 7-5, 7-6(6)

Roddick blasted 16 aces, won 47 of 53 first-serve points, and was never broken en route to an opening-round win over Sam Querrey on Wednesday at the Swiss Indoors. Querrey matched his fellow American serve for serve in the first set before cracking with the pressure on at 5-6. The world No. 22 battled back from 0-30 for 30-30, but two straight backhand errors allowed Roddick to take the set and clinch it on the first break point for either man.

Both players fought off one break point en route to a second-set tiebreaker. Roddick twice led by a mini-break, but Basel's No. 4 seed gave one back with a double-fault and failed to convert match points at 6-4 and on his own serve at 6-5. A forehand mistake from Querrey gave Roddick a third chance at 7-6 and another error from the underdog ended the proceedings. Next up for the world No. 9 is Andrey Golubev.

(WC) Radek Stepanek d. Thiemo De Bakker 6-3, 7-6(5)

De Bakker fired nine aces without double-faulting but it was not enough to overcome Stepanek, who advanced after one hour and 29 minutes of play. Stepanek dropped serve once in the opening set despite winning 17 of 19 first-serve points, but he used two breaks of his own to serve it out at 5-3.

The 38th-ranked Czech trailed by a break in the second, but he battled back to force a tiebreaker. With momentum in hand, Stepanek pulled it out seven points to five and set up a meeting with Santiago Giraldo. De Bakker won only 11 of 25 second-serve points while his opponent won a mere eight of 23 points in which he had to toss in a second delivery. The winner survived it, however, by winning 81 percent of his first-serve points.
