Juan Monaco sent defending champion Andy Murray packing on Wednesday after winning their round of 16 match in three sets. The Argentine is through to the quarterfinals of the Valencia Open 500.
Juan Monaco reached the final eight in Valencia following his 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 victory over top seed Andy Murray. The Argentine secured five of eight break-point opportunities through two hour and 12 minutes. The Scot suffered through a poor service day, with four double-faults and just 47% of first serves made.
After splitting the first two sets, Monaco upped his level in the decider. The 26-year-old, who won 16 if 18 service points, held Murray to a mere two points on the return. The 23-year-old's difficulties on serve continued, as he was broken twice in the set.
"Not a great day at the office today, Monaco played well. Going to get a few good nights sleep in before Paris- last week has been hectic!!" said Murray, post-match.
Monaco will take on either wildcard Pablo Andujar or lucky loser Marcel Granollers in the quarterfinals.
