Novak Djokovic had no trouble handling Latvian Ernests Gulbis as the world No. 3 kicked off his Basel campaign.
Ernests Gulbis pulled out of last week’s Vienna tournament for "personal reasons." The Latvian made his return on Tuesday – but it was short-lived.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic took the early lead in the first set, but Gulbis snagged the break back again to level things. Unfortunately for the underdog, he was too sloppy at the tail-end of the set. Djokovic was able to break back again and took the one-set lead.
Gulbis was pretty much out of the match completely in the second set. Djokovic breezed through his six service games dropping just two points total. Gulbis for his part dumped serve twice and he served at just 56% for the set.
The win sends Djokovic into the second round where he will play either Jarkko Nieminen or Daniel Brands. The Serb is the Basel defending champion.
