World No. 7 Fernando Verdasco made a strong start to the Valencia Open 500 on Monday, having taken out Michael Russell in straight sets. The Spaniard is joined in round two by Stanislas Wawrinka, who defeated Andreas Seppi.

Third seed Fernando Verdasco is through to the second round following his 6-4, 6-1 victory over veteran qualifier Michael Russell. The Spaniard struck five aces and secured five of seven break chances through one hour and 15 minutes of play. The American struggled with his second serve, unable to win more than 29% of the points.
Verdasco is slated to face Gilles Simon in the round of 16. The Frenchman took out Sergiy Stakhovsky in the opening round, 6-3, 6-3.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Andreas Seppi 7-6(2), 7-5
Stanislas Wawrinka came through his opener with Andreas Seppi in straight sets, 7-6(2), 7-5. The 25-year-old Swiss, taking part in his Valencia debut, trailed 5-3 before forcing an opening-set tiebreak. Wawrinka completed the two-hour and three-minute match with nine aces and six of eight break points saved.
He will take on either 8th seed Gael Monfils or Eduardo Schwank for a place in the quarterfinals.
