World No. 5 Robin Soderling won his opening match at the Valencia Open on Tuesday, easily defeating Albert Montanes in straight sets. The Swede is joined in round two by David Ferrer, who rallied to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

Second seed Robin Soderling made a strong start to the event, having downed Albert Montanes, 6-1, 6-4. The Swede struck 14 aces and held nine of nine service games through 62 minutes of play. Soderling quickly led 4-1 in the first set, then followed with a break at 1-1 in the second. The 26-year-old completed the day with a solid 26 of 28 first-serve points captured.
Soderling is due to face Daniel Gimeno-Traver in the round of 16. The Spaniard took out countryman Nicolas Almagro in the first round, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.

Fourth seed David Ferrer survived a tough opener against fellow Spaniard Guillermo Garcia-Lopez on Tuesday. The world No. 8 rallied from a set down to score a three-set victory in two hours and 13 minutes. After splitting the first two sets, Ferrer trailed 2-0 in the third. The 28-year-old recovered to take the next five games. Garcia-Lopez committed six double-faults and made only 47% of his first serves.
Ferrer will take on Teymuraz Gabashvili in the next round. The Russian qualifier defeated veteran Arnaud Clement in the opening round, 6-4, 6-2.
