  • Nalbandian, Cilic cruise at Swiss Indoors

    11/2/10 11:42 PM | Ricky Dimon
Nalbandian, Cilic cruise at Swiss Indoors David Nalbandian advances in Basel with a straight-set win over Jan Hajek on Tuesday. Nalbandian is joined in the second round by Marin Cilic and Janko Tipsarevic.

    David Nalbandian d. (Q) Jan Hajek 6-3, 6-4

Nalbandian kicked off his campaign at the Swiss Indoors in convincing fashion on Tuesday night, handling Hajek in just one hour and 15 minutes. The underdog Czech remained competitive the entire way, but break-point conversions proved to be the difference in each set. Nalbandian capitalized on two of five opportunities and saved all five of the break points he faced, two in the first set and three in the second. Next up for Nalbandian is No. 6 seed Marin Cilic.

    (6) Marin Cilic d. (WC) Marco Chiudinelli 6-3, 6-3

Cilic has been in dreadful form of late, but not even a pro-Swiss crowd was enough for Chiudinelli to pull off an upset win. The 15th-ranked Croat advanced to round two after one hour 29 minutes of play. Chiudinelli saved break points in each of his first two service games, but Cilic soon took control. Basel's No. 6 seed used his second break at 5-3 to win the opening set and he saved all four of the break chances he faced in set two. Cilic finished with seven aces and won 26 of 32 first-serve points.

    Janko Tipsarevic d. Denis Istomin 6-2, 6-4

Tipsarevic never dropped serve despite putting in only 57 percent of his first offerings and he raced past Istomin in just one hour and 14 minutes of play. Two breaks were more than enough for the 46th-ranked Serb to serve out the opening set at 5-2 and he did not look back in the second. Istomin started to put in more first serves, but the Uzbek again failed to convert his lone break chance and Tipsarevic added one more break before finishing it off at 5-4. Next up for Tipsarevic is No. 1 seed Roger Federer.
