Roger Federer dominates Alexandr Dolgopolov on Monday in Basel until the underdog retires with a right ankle injury. Federer awaits either Janko Tipsarevic or Denis Istomin in round two.
Roger Federer kicked off his 2010 Swiss Indoors campaign in routine fashion on Monday evening, leading Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-4, 5-2 when the Ukrainian retired with a right ankle injury. Federer was dominant from start to finish before the proceedings ended prematurely after just 51 minutes of play.
The world No. 2 dropped a mere four service points in the entire match, two in each set. One break was easily enough for Federer to take the opening frame of play, although Dolgopolov at least managed to be competitive.
More of the same continued in the second, but Dolgopolov's serve began to tail off and the 21-year-old saved only one of three break points against him. Federer raced through his service games en route to 5-2, at which point he did not have to fully serve out the match. Dolgopolov twisted his ankle during that game and could not continue.
"I was able to mix it up well and come out and really play a great first round for a tournament where I face a lot of pressure, with all the history I've had here," said Federer, who has won this event three times and finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in 2009. "I'm really happy with the way I played, moved, felt out there. It's nice to be back on center court here in Basel."
The No. 1 seed wrapped up his effort with nine aces and just one double-fault while winning 19 of 20 first-serve points. He will battle either Janko Tipsarevic or Denis Istomin for a spot in the quarterfinals.
