Defending champion Andy Murray is set for a return to competition this week, as he leads the field at the Valencia Open 500 in Spain. The world No. 4 enters the draw as the number one seed.
Andy Murray makes his return to the ATP World Tour for the first week of November, ready to begin his title defense at the Valencia Open 500. The 23-year-old Scot captured the 2009 championship with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over St. Petersburg finalist Mikhail Youzhny.
The world No. 4 commences the event with a 41-14 season record, bolstered by a title-winning run at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai. Murray put together a strong effort to earn his 16th career trophy, ending with a 6-3, 6-2 win against world No. 2 Roger Federer.
The Dunblane native is located in a competitive section of the Valencia draw that hosts (3) Fernando Verdasco, (6) Nikolay Davydenko and (7) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Additional entrants in Murray’s section include Pablo Andujar, Juan Ignacio Chela, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Juan Monaco, Gilles Simon and Dmitry Tursunov.
Murray will open his campaign against Lopez in the first round. With passage into the round of 16, he would face Monaco, already through with an opening-round win over wildcard Roberto Bautista-Agut. The closest seed to Murray is the seventh-seeded Tsonga, who looms as a probable challenger in the quarterfinals. Should he make the final four, the Scot looks to a meeting with either 3rd seed Verdasco or 6th seed Davydenko.
World No. 5 Robin Soderling, taking part in his Valencia Open 500 debut, highlights the bottom half of the draw. The Swede has been place in the same section as (4) David Ferrer, (5) Mikhail Youzhny and (8) Gael Monfils. Other competitors in Soderling’s half are Nicolas Almagro, Daniel Gimeno-Traver, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, Victor Hanescu, Albert Montanes and Stanislas Wawrinka.
Soderling is slated to battle Montanes in the opening round. Progress through the draw would earn the Swede a possible clash with Montpellier champion Monfils in the quarterfinals. A semifinal effort for Soderling would likely set a battle with either Ferrer or Youzhny.

alex: I'm really happy with Andy's draw. Warinka is in Sod's half so hopefully they can knock each other senseless and Andy can easily polish off the winner ;) ...hopefully....

hi deuce.
didn't know he was doing doubles with jamie, extended 'best man' commitment no doubt.
yep, glad wawrinka and sod on other half, although sod seems a bit of a spent force these days - i wouldn't put a lot on him going too far.

Looks like a pretty tough workout for muzz this week - probably tougher than what he had to do to win the shanghai masters.
Let's hope his hand's recovered from the Playstation injury!
Hey TT - what happened to the poll about who's gonna come out on top in indoor h/c season (including all-comers but excluding muzz)? Lose it somewhere? :-)
