World No. 88 Mikhail Kukushkin won his maiden tour title on Sunday after upsetting top seed Mikhail Youzhny at the St. Petersburg Open. The 22-year-old came through in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6(2).
Unseeded Mikhail Kukushkin captured his first career ATP World Tour title Sunday afternoon following his 6-4, 7-6(2) victory against world No. 10 Mikhail Youzhny in St. Petersburg. Kukushkin secured four of 11 break-point opportunities through two hours and 27 minutes of play.
Kukushkin started strongly in the opening set, earning breaks of serve in the fifth and ninth games. Youzhny had his chances to level, twice leading by a break of serve in the second set. Kukushkin recovered both service breaks, then held on to take the tiebreak at 6-2.
Kukushkin completed the day with eight of 10 service games held and 28 of 39 first-serve points won.
With the championship success, the 22-year-old is expected to rise to a career-high world No. 58 ranking on Monday.
