Jurgen Melzer is back in the Vienna title match after a straight-set win over Nicolas Almagro on Saturday. Lucky loser Andreas Haider-Maurer also advances.
(1) Jurgen Melzer d. (3) Nicolas Almagro 6-4, 6-4
Melzer will have a chance to defend his 2009 Bank Austria Tennis Trophy title after booking a spot in the final with victory over Almagro in one hour and 33 minutes. The 12th-ranked Austrian got off to a roaring start, losing a mere one point in his first five service games. One break was easily enough for Melzer to serve out the first set at 5-4.
The second set was far more difficult. With Almagro leading 4-1 and Melzer having been treated for an elbow issue, a third frame of play seemed to be certain. Instead, Vienna's No. 1 seed broke for 3-5 and added another break for 5-4. Melzer ended up winning five straight games to set up an all-Austrian affair with shock finalist Andreas Haider-Maurer.
(LL) Andreas Haider-Maurer d. Michael Berrer vs. 7-6(6), 6-7(1), 6-3
Haider-Maurer needed a lucky loser spot just to get into the main draw and he has now gone all the way to the final. The world No. 157 came through a serve-dominated contest after two hours and 29 minutes.
Neither man could break serve throughout the first set and just two breaks were exchanged in the second. Haider-Maurer edged out the first 'breaker but Berrer raced through the second one to extend the proceedings. In the end, a single break of serve in the third allowed Haider-Maurer to serve out the match at 5-3.
