Haider-Maurer upsets Cilic, Almagro ousts Chela Andreas Haider-Maurer's run as a lucky loser continues with a win over Marin Cilic on Friday in Vienna. Haider-Maurer is joined in the quarterfinals by Nicolas Almagro, who beat Juan Ignacio Chela.

    (LL) Andreas Haider-Maurer d. Marin Cilic 7-6(1), 6-4

Haider-Maurer needed a lucky-loser spot just to get into the main draw, and now he suddenly finds himself in the semifinals of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy following a straight-set upset of Cilic on Friday. The world No. 157 needed one hour and 45 minutes to set up a showdown against either Michael Berrer or No. 4 seed Marcos Baghdatis.

Cilic got off to a strong start by going up a break in the first set, but the 6'6'' Croat failed to serve it out. Once Haider-Maurer broke back, he held onto the momentum the entire rest of the way. The Austrian dominated the first-set tiebreaker seven points to one and he lost a mere four points in five service games during set two. One break was easily enough for Haider-Maurer to serve out the match at 5-4, which he did at love.

    (3) Nicolas Almagro d. Juan Ignacio Chela 7-5, 3-6, 6-3

Almagro fired nine aces and broke serve four times to survive a back-and-forth affair with Chela after one hour and 52 minutes. The 16th-ranked Spaniard battled back from a break deficit in the opening frame of play, fought off a set point, then broke at 5-5 before serving it out at 6-5.

Chela fought back in the second, using two breaks of his own to finish off the set on serve at 5-3. However, the 41st-ranked Argentine could not prevent another momentum swing. Almagro capitalized on dismal serving by Chela for a crucial break and Vienna's No. 3 seed dropped only six points in his last five service games. A hold at 5-3 allowed Almagro to book a semifinal clash against top-seeded Jurgen Melzer.
