Andre Agassi has given his veteran's seal of approval to the choice of his former ATP rival Jim Courier as US Davis Cup captain.
"Jim has the experience, integrity and focus needed to bring the US Davis Cup to new heights," said Agassi, a rival of the Floridian back in their teenaged days two decades ago at the Bollettieri tennis camp.
"I know first hand that a man with Jim's credentials as a warrior and a champion will bring out the best in our players and our fans."
Agassi has stayed well away from the sport since his retirement, concentrating on his charity work which funds a year 1-12 school for underprivileged children in his native Las Vegas.
Exactly a year ago, Agassi was embroiled in a raging controversy after the publication of his autobiography revealed that he had taken crystal meth while a player and gotten away with it by lying his way out of a drug test.
With that episode now in the past, the 40-year-old can afford to breath easier again.
Courier was appointed to the Davis Cup post this week after the retirement of Patrick McEnroe, who held the job for a decade and led the US to the title in 2007, the 32nd in the country's history and one which ended a 12-year trophy dry spell.
