  • Baghdatis, Almagro advance to Vienna quarters

    10/29/10 1:03 AM | Ricky Dimon
Baghdatis, Almagro advance to Vienna quarters Marcos Baghdatis and Nicolas Almagro win their second-round matches in Vienna on Thursday. They defeat Bjorn Phau and Santiago Giraldo, respectively.

    (4) Marcos Baghdatis d. Bjorn Phau 7-5, 6-2

Baghdatis maintained his fine form with a straight-set win over Phau in the second round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Thursday night. The 20th-ranked Cypriot needed one hour and 13 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash against Michael Berrer.

Neither man could break throughout the majority of the first set, but Phau finally cracked and from there it was all over. Baghdatis raced through the second frame of play in far more comfortable fashion, adding two more breaks while losing a mere four points in four service games.

"It's a great winning start," said Vienna's No. 3 seed, who finished with 11 aces but double-faulted five times. "It was tough today, first set, but I did pretty good and I'm happy I won."

    (3) Nicolas Almagro d. Santiago Giraldo 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 6-3

Almagro survived a back-and-forth affair on Thursday to book a spot in the quarterfinals after two hours and seven minutes of play. Giraldo served for the first set only to lose it in a tiebreaker seven points to four. Roles were reversed in the second, with Almagro failing to serve out the match before losing the ensuing 'breaker seven points to three.

Finally, the 16th-ranked Spaniard took control once and for all. He secured an early service break in the third and made it stand up by saving both of the break points he faced during the final set. Almagro fired 12 aces, one fewer than Giraldo, en route to a meeting with Juan Ignacio Chela.
