  • Tsonga and Isner advance in Montpellier

    10/28/10 2:56 AM | Cheryl Murray
Tsonga and Isner advance in Montpellier Jo-Wilfried Tsonga made it through his second round match against Portugal’s Frederico Gil in straight sets. American John Isner also advanced, though with more difficulty.

    Jo-Wilfried Tsonga def. Frederico Gil 6-3, 6-4

France’s Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, the tournament No. 2 seed, had a bit of a struggle in his opening set against Frederico Gil. The Frenchman was forced to fight off 5 break points to keep his lead. Tsonga secured the set’s only service break early, converting the only break point chance he had.

The second set was also decided on a single service break, but in that frame, the Frenchman had a far easier time on serve. Gil did not get a whiff at another break point and Tsonga was able to close out the match in an hour and fifteen minutes. Tsonga awaits the winner of David Nalbandian and either Nicolas Mahut or Gilles Simon in the quarterfinals.

John Isner def. Adrian Mannarino 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 6-3

American John Isner served at 82% for this match and hit 27 aces. And yet France’s Adrian Mannarino, ranked 108 in the world still managed to push Isner to two tiebreakers and to snag a set from the world No. 19.

As usual, Isner’s serve was nearly impenetrable. The American faced no break points and smacked 8 aces. The problem for Isner is that his return was almost as weak as his serve was strong. Mannarino also faced no break points; the set was decided with a tiebreaker. Isner just managed to sneak out the set with a 7-5 score.

The second set offered more of the same. Isner found no purchase on Mannarino’s serve and the two men were forced into another breaker. The American looked on his way to a straight set victory when he surged to a 5-2 lead in the set decider. It was not to be. Mannarino came roaring back, won the next 5 points, and with them, the set.

Isner secured the only break of the match in the third set, though he was forced to fight off another 4 break point chances in the process. The American moves into the quarterfinals.
