  • Melzer, Cilic advance to Vienna quarterfinals

    10/28/10 12:18 AM | Ricky Dimon
Melzer, Cilic advance to Vienna quarterfinals Jurgen Melzer and Marin Cilic win their Vienna openers on Wednesday. They are through to the quarterfinals after victories over Lukasz Kubot and Jan Hajek, respectively.

    (1) Jurgen Melzer d. Lukasz Kubot 7-6(3), 7-6(2)

Melzer treated the Austrian crowd to a straight-set victory and a berth in the quarterfinals after taking out Kubot in the second round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Wednesday. This was a tense one right from the start, as the first set featured several momentum swings. Melzer went up an early break only to see Kubot break back twice and serve for the set at 5-4. However, the 66th-ranked Pole failed to serve it out and Melzer dominated the ensuing tiebreaker seven points to three.

Two breaks were exchanged in the second frame of play en route to another 'breaker. Again, Melzer proved to be far too tough at the crucial moments and he eased through the decider seven points to two. The No. 1 seed and defending champion needed two hours and 12 minutes to advance and he fired six aces while benefiting from nine Kubot double-faults. Next up for Melzer is No. 7 seed Philipp Kohlschreiber, who dispatched Tobias Kamke in straight sets.

    (2) Marin Cilic d. Jan Hajek 7-6(4), 6-2

Cilic has been in dismal form since the spring, but he survived a second-round test in Vienna on Wednesday and booked a spot in the quarterfinals after one hour and 37 minutes of play. The second-seeded Croat got off to an inauspicious start and Hajek even served for the first set at 5-4. Nonetheless, Cilic fought back for a break and he maintained control the rest of the way.

After taking the opening-set 'breaker seven points to four, the world No. 14 raced through the second set. Cilic broke serve twice and saved all three of the break points he faced before serving out the match at 5-4. Hajek wrapped up his effort with six aces and four double-faults while Cilic struck 11 aces without double-faulting and he fought off nine of 10 break points. Cilic awaits either Andreas Seppi or Andreas Haider-Maurer on Friday.
