New US Davis Cup captain Jim Courier expects to pick up where previous boss Patrick McEnroe left off after leading the team to a 2007 title.
The American federation announced it had hired the former Australian and French Open champion, replacing McEnroe who held the job for a decade.
The US leads the Davis Cup table with 32 titles, but only one in the last decade. It came in 2007 and ended a trophy drought of a dozen years. "It's something that I certainly aspired to," Courier said. "I definitely thought that being the captain would be something that I'd enjoy, and now I get to see if I will."
Courier is a former Davis Cup player and was a member of championship sides in 1992 and 1995. He ended with a record of 16-10 record in singles and won his only doubles match in the worldwide team competition.
The 40-year-old former No. 1, who retired in 2000, claimed Australian titles in 1992 and 1993 and won Roland Garros in 1991 and 1992. Courier's first test as captain will come against Chile next March 4-6. "We're certainly going to have a test down there, there's no doubt about that, playing in South America, likely to be on clay," he said.
