Thomas Muster says that despite his first-round loss in his ATP comeback in Vienna, the experience has cemented his plan to engineer a return to tennis at age 43.
The Austrian gave away 20 years in a defeat by compatriot Andreas Haider-Maurer. But a crowd of 7,000 loved the return of the former tennis iron man who once stood No. 1 in the world and won the French Open 15 years ago.
"It was an unbelievable standing ovation, a great atmosphere," said Muster, who is pointing his unorthodox return at Challenger-level events and ATP wild cards from March. "I hope to get some wild cards from tournaments I once won," said the holder of 44 ATP titles in the 1980s and 1990s.
"For the next couple of years, that's what I want to do. I want to try and win some matches . It's very enjoyable for me and awesome to be back playing."
The veteran said he pulled up fit from his match in Vienna. "There was no pain, I'm fit and I know I can play long matches," added the competitor who willingly gave up drinking and smoking as he plotted his return to the game.

It was interesting to watch him play.
He doesn't have the pace on the ball or in his feet to out do the younger guys, he's going to have to play more tactically if he has a realistic chance of taking anyone in their 20's, particularly ATP regulars.
