Third seed Janko Tipsarevic made a successful start to his 2010 St. Petersburg Open, having downed Igor Kunitsyn in straight sets. Sixth seed Denis Istomin bowed out of the opening round with a right knee injury.

World No. 46 Janko Tipsarevic is through to the round of 16, following his 6-4, 6-2 victory over Igor Kunitsyn. The Serbian fired seven aces and held nine of nine service games without facing a break point. The 26-year-old improved his season record to 23-20 after sealing the first-round win in 64 minutes of play.
Tipsarevic will take on Michael Russell for a place in the quarterfinal. The veteran American dismissed wildcard Igor Andreev in the opening round, 6-1, 7-5.
Illya Marchenko def. (6) Denis Istomin 6-2, 2-2 (retired)
World No. 99 Illya Marchenko moved into the second round, after 6th seed Denis Istomin retired during the second set. Marchenko led 6-2, 2-2 at the 52-minute mark, when Istomin called it a day with a right knee problem.
Marchenko is due to face qualifier Konstantin Kravchuk in the round of 16. The Russian beat fellow qualifier Frantisek Cermak in the opening round, 6-2, 6-3.
