Thomas Muster loses to Andreas Haider-Maurer in the Vienna first round on Tuesday but takes the second set to a tiebreaker. Lukasz Kubot advances with a win over James Blake.
Thomas Muster did not disappoint in his first ATP match since the 1999 French Open.
Muster fell to Andreas Haider-Maurer 6-2, 7-6(5) in the opening round of the Bank Austria Tennis Trophy on Tuesday evening. The 43-year-old got off to an inauspicious start by dropping his first service game, but he was competitive with his 23-year-old countryman the entire rest of the may.
Muster, a former world No. 1, never made any serious challenge in return games, but he fought off four break points in the second set including a fightback from 0-40 down. He twice recovered from a mini-break down in the tiebreaker, highlighted by a huge forehand winner at 4-6. However, an errant forehand from Muster allowed Haider-Maurer to convert his second match point.
Muster wrapped up his effort with five aces, one fewer than Haider-Maurer.
Lukasz Kubot booked a spot in the second round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over wild card James Blake. Kubot needed just one hour and nine minutes to secure his first ATP main-draw win since Wimbledon.
Blake got off to a quick start with an early break, but he saved none of the break points he faced in set one and Kubot's second break of the day came decisively at 5-4. The 66th-ranked Pole failed to served out the match at 5-3 in the second, but his opponent squandered a 40-0 lead at 4-5 and Kubot's fifth break of the match clinched the win.
Kubot capitalized on all five of his break-point opportunities en route to a meeting with No. 1 seed and defending champion Jurgen Melzer.
