As the tennis season winds down for 2010, Montpellier, France still drew an impressive lineup for the last week in October.
Nikolay Davydenko leads the field in the Open Sud de France tournament starting on Monday. The Russian, though the top seed in the tournament, is not Tennistalk’s pick to win the title. Davydenko has struggled mightily this fall. He was the defending champion at the Shanghai Masters but crashed out in his first match to Mischa Zverev.
Davydenko’s half of the draw is the weaker of the two. The other top seed in the top portion is Ivan Ljubicic, who is also struggling. Unfortunately for the Russian, Robin Haase, Jarkko Nieminen and Michael Llodra also lay in wait. All three prefer the fast indoor courts. France’s Richard Gasquet also landed in the top half.
The bottom half boasts Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, John Isner, Gael Monfils and David Nalbandian. Most likely the winner of the tournament will come from this section of the draw. Monfils in particular has been playing well this fall. Gilles Simon and Nicolas Mahut are in the bottom half and playing each other in the first round.
Prediction – Monfils for the title.
