• Federer to savor 64th career title

    10/25/10 3:14 PM | Johan Lindahl
Federer to savor 64th career title Roger Federer is preparing to savor his latest tennis accomplishment after leveling with Pete Sampras on 64 career titles thanks to his victory over Florian Mayer at the Stockholm Open.

The 16-time Grand Slam champion from Switzerland and the retired American - who ironically was beaten at a senior event western China at the weekend by Greg Rusedski - are joint fourth on the all-time table. They trail leader Jimmy Connors with 109 trophy, Ivan Lendl (94) and third-placed John McEnroe on 77.

"You want to savor every victory you never know which one will be the last," said Federer, now a winner of titles in 18 different nations. "Things move really fast. Stockholm is maybe one tournament to remember more than some others."

Federer's trophy was his third of 2010 after the Australian Open and Cincinnati prior to the US Open. He stands 3-4 in 2010 finals in 15 events played.

He said that despite tying the Sampras record, it's not something he thought much about. "I I haven't thought about the record in a long time. Pete could have won more titles had he kept on playing.

"You want to savor every victory, you never know which one will be the last," said the 29-year-old. "Winning a title is all about the enjoyment for me now. I don't have to prove myself to anyone. I enjoy it all more. I get a great feeling of satisfaction."
