  • Troicki ousts Tsonga to reach Moscow quarterfinals

Troicki ousts Tsonga to reach Moscow quarterfinals Viktor Troicki takes out Jo-Wilfried Tsonga on Thursday in Moscow. Troicki is joined in the quarterfinals by Alexandr Dolgopolov, who won an all-Ukrainian affair over Sergiy Stakhovsky.

    Viktor Troicki d. (3) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 3-6, 6-3, 7-5

Troicki fired 14 aces to upset Tsonga in two hours and two minutes on Thursday at the Kremlin Cup. The 43rd-ranked Serb overcame a set deficit to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Horacio Zeballos. It was Tsonga, however, who got off to a fast start. Moscow's No. 3 seed struck for an early break and held serve the rest of the way in set one.

Then it was Troicki's turn to take control. A single break also decided the second set, this time in Troicki's favor. A pair of breaks were exchanged en route to 5-5 in the third, at which point Tsonga cracked and was broken despite leading 40-15. Troicki promptly served out the match to finish off the upset.

    Alexandr Dolgopolov d. (7) Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-2, 7-6(4)

Dolgopolov saved five of six break points and seized three breaks of his own to reach the quarterfinals and set up a showdown with Marcos Baghdatis. Stakhovsky, who seemed to be battling a leg problem the whole way, came out slow and donated serve twice in the first set, saving none of the break points he faced.

The seventh-seeded Ukrainian played through the pain to make for a more competitive second frame of play, but his countryman was too good. Dolgopolov made one final push in the tiebreaker to take it seven points to four. This is Stakhovsky's first loss in 19 matches against fellow Ukrainians (qualifiers, Challengers, and Futures included).
