Stockholm - Federer, Soderling through to quarterfinals Roger Federer made the final eight at the If Stockholm Open following his straight-set victory over Taylor Dent. The Swiss is joined in the quarterfinals by Robin Soderling, who recorded a straight-set win against Benjamin Becker.

    (1) Roger Federer def. Taylor Dent 6-1, 6-2

Top seed Roger Federer breezed into the quarterfinal with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Taylor Dent. The Swiss converted four of seven break chances through 51 minutes of play. The American struggled with his second serve, unable to take more than seven of 20 points. With the round of 16 success, the world No. 2 is through to his 12th quarterfinal of the season.

Federer will face fifth-seeded compatriot Stanislas Wawrinka for a spot in the semifinal. Wawrinka downed Robin Haase in the round of 16, 7-5, 6-7(6), 6-4.

    (2) Robin Soderling def. Benjamin Becker 6-3, 6-3

Second seed Robin Soderling had little trouble reaching the last eight, having upended Benjamin Becker in 65 minutes, 6-3, 6-3. The Swede held nine of nine service games without facing a single break point. The 26-year-old turned in a solid day on serve, holding the German to a mere eight points on the return.

Soderling is next to battle Florian Mayer in the quarterfinal. The German ousted wildcard Michael Ryderstedt in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-4.

What was that about Soderling becoming number 1 in a matter of seconds? Ho hum...Gr8 tennis players don't necessarily become gr8 prophets.

Great minds think alike. I was on the brink of posting a comment along the same lines.
Over rated and over hyped........as we were discussing only yesterday.

soderling is a one dimensional brainless oaf. His game is built heavily around his serve and his monstrous forehand. But when either shot isnt working his game becomes a bundle of unforced errors. Its quite hilarious to watch at times.
