Marcos Baghdatis defeats Alexandr Dolgopolov in straight sets on Friday for a place in the Moscow semifinals. Pablo Cuevas and Viktor Troicki also advanced.
(4) Marcos Baghdatis d. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-2, 7-6(7)
Baghdatis battled through a tight second set to dismiss Dolgopolov in one hour and 22 minutes in the quarterfinals of the Kremlin Cup on Friday evening. The 19th-ranked Cypriot dominated the opening set by breaking twice and losing just five points in his first four service games. However, Baghdatis converted none of his three break chances in the second and thus had to play a tiebreaker. Dolgopolov earned two sets points--one on his own serve--but he was forced into errors on both occasions by huge Baghdatis forehands. Moscow's No. 4 seed then capitalized on his first match point when the 22-year-old Ukrainian netted a forehand. Baghdatis will face Denis Istomin for a place in the semis.
Pablo Cuevas d. (5) Radek Stepanek 6-4, 7-6(3)
One round after taking out No. 1 seed Nikolay Davydenko, Cuevas upset Stepanek in one hour and 43 minutes on Friday to reach the Moscow quarterfinals. After winning the first set with a single break, Cuevas fell behind 5-2 in the second. However, the 71st-ranked Uruguayan stormed back to force a tiebreaker, which he dominated seven points to three. Cuevas, more of a clay-court player by nature, struck 10 aces to Stepanek's two. Next up for Cuevas is an all-unseeded semifinal clash against Viktor Troicki.
Viktor Troicki d. Horacio Zeballos 6-2, 6-1
Troicki won 21 of 22 first-serve points and was never broken as he crushed Zeballos in just one hour and five minutes on Friday. The 43rd-ranked Serb saved both of the break points he faced in set one, so two breaks of his own were more than enough for him to serve out the opening frame of play at 5-2. Zeballos completely disappeared in the second, winning only two return points and 10 points in total. Troicki's fifth break of the day at 5-1 ended the proceedings in style.
