  • Muster set to thrill Austrian fans with Vienna wildcard

    10/21/10 8:07 PM | Johan Lindahl
Muster set to thrill Austrian fans with Vienna wildcard Austrian fans will get a unique exposure to their tennis past and present after 43-year-old one-time star Thomas Muster accepted an invitation to play the Bank Austria Trophy next week.

The 1995 French Open winner and one-time king of clay before the Rafael Nadal era has been testing his veteran's game with limited success on the entry-level Challenger circuit since the summer.

Muster has barely made an impression at the lower stage, winning one match in six events against players up to two decades his junior.

But the one-time iron man is not about giving up and after reflection decided to see if he can give his home public a thrill or two indoors. Muster returned to the Challengers after finding the over-35 Champions circuit perhaps too easy for his liking.

Muster will be the oldest man to play on the ATP since Jimmy Connors in Atlanta aged 43 and a half back in 1996. Muster has 13 previous appearances in Vienna, finishing runner-up three times. His last appearance as a competitor at home was a dozen years ago.

"I'm looking forward to it enormously," said Muster, 11 years removed from any ATP competition with his last showing at the 1999 French Open. "I want to inspire the crowd with my fitness and fighting spirit. I'm fighting like in the good old times and I will give everything in front of the fans in Vienna.”

Current-day Austrian tennis hero Jurgen Melzer will be defending his 2009 title as he plays as top seed. The venue is also due for a return by Juan Martin Del Potro, whose comeback from wrist surgery has not been going according to plan, forcing him to early losses in Asia and a withdrawal form the Shanghai Masters.

Jawohl! Muster can start by beating del Potro and then federer and nadal and murray... on the same day... then djokovic for dinner...
