Former player Patrick Rafter will take over as captain of the Australian Davis Cup team, with veteran coach Tony Roche returning for another run with the team.
The pair will hope to breath new life into the 28-time championship nation, which has been exiled from the World Group since 2007.
Former world No. 1 Rafter's first test will come as an Asia-Oceania Group I tie against Taiwan in Melbourne next March. Australia owns 28 Davis trophies, four less than the all-time best of 32 for the US.
Fitzgerald served for 10 years, leading the former tennis power to a pair of finals including the 2003 champion over Spain.
"I want to congratulate Fitzy on his magnificent career in a tremendous decade as Davis Cup captain with obviously the 2003 victory as a highlight," said Rafter 37. "I'm really looking forward to working with the team and helping lift Australian men's tennis on the world stage.
"We've got a lot of young players that have a great opportunity to play for Australia. My standards and expectations are extremely high. This is a great opportunity to be part of something that means a lot to me."
