Radek Stepanek beats Victor Hanescu in straight sets on Tuesday in Moscow. He is joined in the second round by Denis Istomin and Mikhail Kukushkin.
(5) Radek Stepanek d. Victor Hanescu 7-6(5), 6-3
Stepanek took care of Hanescu after one hour and 21 minutes in the first round of the Kremlin Cup on Tuesday. Neither man entered the event in good form, but it was Stepanek who took control midway through the match. No break points were had in the first set en route to a tiebreaker, which was close the entire way. Stepanek led 6-5 and took advantage of a Hanescu second serve to earn the mini-break and the set. Moscow's No. 5 seed needed just one break in the second, which he seized at 4-3 before serving out the proceedings in routine fashion. Next up for Stepanek is Mikhail Kukushkin.
Denis Istomin d. Illya Marchenko 6-7(4), 6-2, 6-2
Istomin stormed back from a set deficit to defeat Marchenko in two hours and 19 minutes on Tuesday. It was a near-dominant serving display by Istomin from start to finish, but Marchenko saved five break points in the first set to force a tiebreaker. The Ukrainian took the 'breaker seven points to four, but from there it was all Istomin. A quick break in the second reversed the momentum and Istomin eventually earned another break before serving out the set at 5-2. The 46th-ranked Uzbek dropped a mere four points in his last four service games to cruise through the final frame of play. Istomin will meet No. 2 seed Mikhail Youzhny for a spot in the quarterfinals.
Mikhail Kukushkin d. Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-4
Kukushkin never dropped serve as he dismissed Chardy in just one hour and 17 minutes in first-round action on Tuesday. Two breaks were more than enough for the 74th-ranked Kazakh before he served out the opening frame of play at 5-2. Kukushkin added one break in the second, but Chardy had a chance to get back on serve with a break point at 4-5. Nonetheless, the 49th-ranked Frenchman could not convert and Kukushkin finished off the match to advance to round two. Both men recorded eight aces, and Kukushkin capitalized on three of four break-point opportunities.
