  • Youzhny, Tipsarevic return to Kremlin Cup

    10/17/10 10:10 PM | Ricky Dimon
Youzhny, Tipsarevic return to Kremlin Cup 2009 Moscow finalists Mikhail Youzhny and Janko Tipsarevic will be looking for repeat performances this week. A rematch of the final is possible with the two players on opposite sides of the draw.

Russia has the top two seeds at this week's Kremlin Cup in Moscow, but one is hopelessly out of form while the other is in complete command of his game.

This time last year, Nikolay Davydenko was coming off a title at title at the Shanghai Masters and would go on to win the World Tour Finals in London. It's much different story in 2010. Davydenko is still the No. 1 seed thanks to his No. 6 ranking, but his free-fall will begin on Monday when his Shanghai points come off the board.

Mikhail Youzhny, on the other hand, is in prime contention for London. He made it to the semifinals of the U.S. Open and won the Kuala Lumpur title earlier this month. Youzhny, ranked eighth in the world, lost early in Beijing and Shanghai but he should be well-rested for his title defense this week.

Janko Tipsarevic finished runner-up to Youzhny last year in Moscow and is back for another run. Whereas Youzhny is in a tough bottom half of the draw, Tipsarevic could have an easier time of things in the top section. However, the Serb is on a collision course with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for the quarterfinals.

Youzhny's path begins with either Denis Istomin or Illya Marchenko before a potential quarterfinal against Andrey Golubev. Youzhny and Golubev met in the Kuala Lumpur final, with the Kazakh extending it to a third-set tiebreaker.

Davydenko's quarter is wide open. Normally a clear favorite, he lost to Richard Gasquet in the second round of the U.S. Open, was upset by John Isner in Beijing, and dropped his Shanghai opener to world No. 118 Mischa Zverev. As such, the door is wide open for fifth-seeded Radek Stepanek as well as unseeded Jeremy Chardy.
