World No. 3 Roger Federer put together a solid quarterfinal-round performance on Friday, having downed world No. 5 Robin Soderling 6-1, 6-1 on Friday. The Swiss is through to the final four at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai.
Third seed Roger Federer needed just 54 minutes to defeat fifth seed Robin Soderling on Friday evening. The 29-year-old, who improved to 14-1 lifetime against the Swede, held seven consecutive service games without facing a break point. Federer kept Soderling to a mere 11 points on the return en route to posting his 47th ATP World Tour victory of the season.
"It's a great match for me," said Federer. "Surprising that it all went so fast. [It was] somewhat close in the beginning to get the 4-1 lead. I guess that was the hard work.
"After that, I was just able to roll away with the score. He started to struggle and it got more difficult. I know he didn't have one of his best days."
Federer completed the evening with five aces and five of six break chances converted.
He faces world No. 2 Novak Djokovic for a place in the Shanghai final. The Serb cruised through to a 6-2, 6-3 quarterfinal win over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.
