  • Murray downs Chardy, into World Tour Finals

    10/14/10 5:45 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray downs Chardy, into World Tour Finals Andy Murray reaches the Shanghai quarterfinals on Thursday with a straight-set win over Jeremy Chardy. Murray also becomes the fourth player to clinch a spot in the year-end World Tour Finals.

Andy Murray improved to 3-0 lifetime against Jeremy Chardy and booked a place in the quarterfinals of the Shanghai Rolex Masters with a 6-3, 6-4 victory on Thursday. Murray set up an intriguing clash with Jo-Wilfried Tsonga after one hour and 21 minutes of play.

What turned out to be a straightforward win began with some tense moments. Murray, who admitted afterward that he showed some nerves knowing that a place in the World Tour Finals was at stake, had to fight off five break points early in the first set. Because he saved all of them, one break was enough for the fourth-ranked Scot to take the first set.

Murray greatly improved his serve in the second frame of play, putting in 63 percent of his first offerings and losing a mere four points in five service games. Chardy again donated serve only once, but the Frenchman still could not overcome it. A final service hold at 5-4 clinched the win and allowed Murray to join Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Novak Djokovic at the year-end event in London.

"It's great having now qualified for the Finals, and it's amazing I get to play in front of a home crowd again," said the No. 4 seed, who finished with nine aces and two double-faults. "It was such a good atmosphere there last year. I think it's a great achievement to qualify for the Finals.... Today was a good match. I was happy with the way I played, too, which helps."

Murray went 2-1 in round-robin play last year in London, but he was edged out by eventual runner-up Juan Martin Del Potro for a place in the semifinals by a single game difference.
