Juan Monaco beats his third straight unseeded opponent to reach the Shanghai quarterfinals on Thursday. And now instead of running into Rafael Nadal, Monaco will battle Jurgen Melzer for a place in the semis.
Juan Monaco's draw at the Shanghai Rolex Masters has been getting better and better by the day, and he is not letting the opportunity slip away.
After disposing of Florent Serra in the first round, Monaco faced Thiemo De Bakker instead of Fernando Verdasco and ousted the 22-year-old Dutchman in three sets. He then went up against Mischa Zverev instead of Nikolay Davydenko on Thursday and the result was a 6-0, 6-2 blowout.
Furthermore, it was an extremely hobbled Zverev. The 118th-ranked German, who upset Davydenko in round two and also enjoyed a recent runner-up performance in Metz, had his right calf severely taped. Zverev moved gingerly the entire match and went down to Monaco in just one hour and five minutes.
After losing a mere five points in the entire first set, Monaco finally encountered at least some minor trouble early in the second. However, the 41st-ranked Argentine saved five break points and from there it was all over. Two more breaks of his own allowed Monaco to serve out the proceedings at 5-2.
As if his draw could get any better, Monaco will meet Jurgen Melzer--not Rafael Nadal--for a place in the semis. Melzer stunned the world No. 1 in three sets on Thursday. Monaco is 4-1 lifetime against the 12th-ranked Austrian.
