  • Murray makes quick work of his Shanghai opener

    10/13/10 4:44 PM | Ricky Dimon
Murray makes quick work of his Shanghai opener Andy Murray eases past Chinese wild card Yan Bai in the Shanghai second round on Wednesday. Next up Murray is Jeremy Chardy.

    (4) Andy Murray d. (WC) Yan Bai 6-2, 6-2

Murray needed just one hour and 21 minutes to get through his opener at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Wednesday, dismissing Bai in easy straight sets. A 21-year-old Chinese wild card, Bai was clearly rattled playing in the second round of a Masters event for the first time, even though he did well to upset Radek Stepanek on Tuesday. Bai dropped the first four games of the match against Murray before finally getting on the scoreboard with a service hold.

Just as he did in the opening frame of play, Murray also raced to a two-break lead in the second for an immediate 3-0 advantage. The fourth-ranked Scot, however, suddenly dropped serve for the first time. Still, he broke right back in the next game and after missing two match points on Bai's serve at 5-1, Murray served out the proceedings without any trouble. Next up for the No. 4 seed is Jeremy Chardy.

    (Q) Jeremy Chardy d. Alexandr Dolgopolov 6-1, 5-7, 6-2

Despite being extended to three sets, Chardy only needed one hour and 36 minutes to dispatch Dolgopolov on Wednesday and reach the Shanghai third round. That's in part due to a lightning-quick first set in which the Frenchman faced no break points and used two breaks of his own to completely dominate.

Chardy cracked while serving to stay in the second set at 5-6, but that was the only break--and the only break point--he allowed Dolgopolov the entire way. The 21-year-old Ukrainian threw away the momentum and went away quietly in set three as he continued to struggle on serve and won very few second-serve points. Chardy, who finished with 10 aces, served out the match 5-2. Dolgopolov also recorded 10 aces but he was doomed by seven double-faults.
