World No. 3 Roger Federer made a successful debut in Shanghai late Wednesday with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over second-round opponent John Isner. The Swiss won his 45th ATP World Tour match of the season.
Third seed Roger Federer is through to the third round at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Shanghai, having downed World No. 20 John Isner in straight sets. The 29-year-old held 10 of 10 service games through 63 minutes of play.
Federer led 3-1 in the opening set, aided by a trademark forehand strike. The Swiss encountered little trouble to reach triple set point at 5-3. Federer closed the set with a heavy forehand, forcing a volley error from Isner.
The world No. 3 took a 4-3 advantage in set two, after Isner erred on the backhand wing. Two match points came quickly for Federer, who sealed the victory with an unreturnable serve.
"Maybe they're tricky coming back the first couple of matches, but once you're in, it's a big advantage you had time off," said Federer. "Today I thought was a really good match because I knew the danger in John Isner. He's really a great player, rising, up and coming. I think he's going to have a really good career. Today I knew I was in for a tough match with a really difficult draw. I'm really happy I was able to come through and play a match with a lot of energy, a lot of variation, a match that was really solid for a first round after not having played for so long."
Federer completed the evening with 30 winners and five aces.
He is slated to face Andreas Seppi for a place in the quarterfinal. The Italian ousted Yen-Hsun Lu in the second round, 7-6(4), 6-3.
