Illness has been making the rounds in Shanghai. Germany’s Philipp Kohlschreiber was forced to retire in his opening round match against Andy Roddick. Tomas Berdych has also been affected.
American Andy Roddick got a mostly free pass into the second round in Shanghai. The American was battling an ill Philipp Kohlschreiber, who retired at 3-6, 1-2. The sickness clearly bothered Kohlschreiber from the outset and finally into the second set, the German retired.
The Czech Republic’s Tomas Berdych also reported struggling with illness. The Wimbledon finalist said after the match that he had eaten almost nothing in two days and felt extremely weak. "I felt quite weak so I was trying to play a little more aggressively, play really risky shots just to try to hang in there," the Czech said when asked about his condition.
Fortunately for Berdych, his strategy of keeping points short paid off. After dishing out a first set bagel, he went down a break in the second. Robredo was unable to capitalize and ended up giving the break back, plus another to give Berdych the win.
