  • De Bakker sends Verdasco to fourth straight loss

    10/11/10 4:44 PM | Ricky Dimon
De Bakker sends Verdasco to fourth straight loss Thiemo De Bakker upsets Fernando Verdasco in straight sets on Monday in Shanghai. De Bakker is joined in the second round by Jeremy Chardy, who took out Marcos Baghdatis.

    Thiemo De Bakker d. (9) Fernando Verdasco 7-6(4), 7-5

De Bakker extended Verdasco's losing streak to four with an upset win after one hour and 53 minutes of play during first-round action at the Shanghai Rolex Masters on Monday. It was competitive the entire way, with neither player earning a single break point in the opening set. De Bakker took the tiebreaker seven points to four for an early lead.

Verdasco bounced back with a quick break in the second, but he could not sustain the momentum. The ninth-ranked Spaniard gave it back and was soon broken again at 5-5. De Bakker, who finished with seven aces, promptly served out the match. The 21-year-old Dutchman is through to a meeting with either Juan Monaco or Florent Serra. Verdasco, meanwhile, has now lost four matches in a row dating back to the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open.

    (Q) Jeremy Chardy d. Marcos Baghdatis 7-6(4), 6-1

Baghdatis has lost the form that took him to an awesome hard-court summer in the U.S., and Chardy capitalized on it to prevail in one hour and 39 minutes. The first set was at least respectable for Baghdatis, as a pair of breaks were exchanged on the way to a tiebreaker. Chardy took it seven points to four and Baghdatis never showed any signs of responding.

The 18th-ranked Cypriot lost the first five games of set two before finally getting on the scoreboard with a hold for 1-5. Chardy, who served poorly throughout the second frame but fought off all three of the break points he faced, closed out the proceedings to set up a second-round clash against Alexandr Dolgopolov. The 59th-ranked Frenchman recorded just one ace and three double-faults despite scoring the minor upset.
